Portrait of Anne James

Anne James

Anne James is a cultural anthropologist who advises cultural institutions, travel and tourism brands on strategy and AI governance. A certified AI Governance Professional (IAPP), she sits on the board of PhotoIreland and is a member of the Center for AI and Digital Policy's AI Policy Clinic, Culture Action Europe's Digital & AI Action Group and the AI4LAM AI Literacy Working Group.

Before turning to governance, she spent more than a decade as Head of Marketing for enterprise software companies, including AI companies partnered with NVIDIA and Anthropic. She knows how AI is sold, and what the sales deck leaves out.

She also knows the nonprofit world from the inside. In 2012 she founded Zymbol, an internationally distributed print magazine of contemporary literature and art, which she published until 2017, when it was absorbed into a larger publisher. She was Senior Editor at St. Petersburg Review, served as treasurer of the New England Poetry Club, and raised major gifts for Threshold, Ireland's national housing charity.

Anthropology taught me to look past what an organisation says, to how it behaves. I've read a lot of earnest values statements, but I can tell you, it's so easy to erode those commitments with fine print in vendor contracts or irresponsible staff use of chatbots. Often no one notices until there's a public trust crisis. My work is to make sure your values reach the places where you need to walk the talk.
